University of Exeter Creative Writing & Arts Programme - Mentoring Project

University of Exeter Creative Writing & Arts Programme

South West writers mentoring project

Location: Devon

Deadline: Closing Deadline For Application: Friday 5th February 2010

Dates & Times: March 2010 for 18 months.

Applications are invited for a new mentoring project to run from March 2010 for 18 months. Selected applicants will be mentored by one of our two Writers-in-Residence, Paul Dodgson or Clare George, receiving support which could include telephone, email, one-to-one meetings, and day-long seminars at the University of Exeter.

This is NOT a reading service to edit your book prior to submission to agents, but is to offer you advice and support at this crucial stage in your writing. We will host a public reading/event at the end of the programme.

TEN places are available to authors currently living permanently in the SW region and who are writing a novel, a collection of short stories, or a work of memoir, biography or autobiography only. Application is open* and is by submission of:

• a one-page synopsis of your current work-in-progress;
• an extract from this work-in-progress, of no more than 2,500 words;
• a statement of intent as to what you hope to get out of the mentoring relationship;
• a 2 page CV showing some track record of published work or literary activities;
• proof of permanent residence in the SW region.

* Students currently enrolled on a recognised CW progamme are not eligible to apply.

All decisions are final and non-negotiable, made by a panel of the Writers-in-Residence and the Programme’s Steering Group, including an Arts Council representative.

Paul Dodgson is a well-known writer-producer/director. He has made and written over 400 programmes for BBC Radio 4 and 3, and is a freelance writer for television, radio and stage, as well as a published short story and life writer himself.

Clare George is the author of two novels, The Evangelist (Sceptre, 2005) and The Cloud Chamber (Sceptre, 2003). Her short stories have been broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
