Poetry Writing

Bring your new work, your evolving work and - especially - your problematic work to a dedicated surgery for a line-by-line diagnosis of its condition. You’ll circulate your poems to the group in advance, and will receive a number of detailed sessions of in-depth feedback on your work a term. Each session ends with writing exercises based on a range of contemporary poets’ work.

Explore one of poetry’s primary magical functions: to reach across time and space and talk to the dead and the lost. You’ll be reading some great ‘letter poems’, finding out about the constraints and delights of writing to, as well as about, a particular person; finally writing your own letters to the lost.

Rhythm is the backbone of a poem. Through exercises and feedback, you’ll fillet classic and contemporary examples to gain a greater appreciation of the rhythmic strategies which are commonly used in English poetry. Some prior knowledge of traditional rhythms would be useful though not essential.

This lively workshop covers the basics of submission to magazines and takes you through the process of analyzing a magazine to determine its appropriateness for your own work. Please bring one copy of 10 of your poems, and a poetry magazine you like.

Mimi guides you through different styles of lineation, using examples from contemporary poets, both British and American.
