The Literary Consultancy’s Free Reads Scheme

The Literary Consultancy (TLC) http://www.literaryconsultancy.co.uk is one of the UK’s leading manuscript assessment services, provides expert, market-aware editorial advice to writers at all levels writing in English.

TLC have received funding nationally from Arts Council England to run the Free Reads scheme which enables them to offer their normal manuscript appraisal service for free to a limited number of talented writers in each region who otherwise might not be able to afford their services. The money is allocated by financial year so the current provision is only available until the end of March 09.

In the South West, Arts Council England South West and Poetry Can are working together to choose a small number of talented, low-income writers working in fiction, creative non-fiction and poetry to be put forward for the scheme.

If you are based in the South West and would like to be considered for a Free Read as part of the 2008/2009 scheme before it finishes at the end of March you need to send:

  • CV
  • Short sample of the work that you want to be assessed (up to 10 sides)
  • Short summary of the work i.e. giving details of overall length of manuscript or number of poems
  • Short statement saying why a Free Read would be useful to you at this stage in your career as a writer

Please send these by email to:

Kate Offord, Literature Officer, Arts Council England, South West, 2nd Floor, Senate House, Southernhay Gardens, Exeter, EX1 1UG,

Email: kate.offord@artscouncil.org.uk, Direct tel: 01392 229273.

Deadline - Monday 2 March 2009.

If you are chosen for a Free Read we will contact you as soon as possible after this date with details of what to do next.

This opportunity is to take advantage of the Free Reads scheme 2008/09 which will finish at the end of March. If you are interested in taking part in the scheme for 2009/10 from April onwards please contact Kate for more details.
