Bridport Short Story Prize 2009 now open

The Bridport Prize is the richest open writing competition in the English language - with £5000 first prize for a short story (of up to 5000 words)

It is known as a tremendous literary stepping stone - the first step in the careers of writers such as: Kate Atkinson, Tobias Hill, Carol Ann Duffy and Helen Dunmore.

Anyone can enter, as long as the work is previously unpublished.

Guidelines:

Poems of 42 lines maximum.

2009 Judge:
Ali Smith

1st prize = £5000
2nd prize = £1000
3rd prize = £500

10 supplementary prizes of £50 each

The winning stories and shortlist will be read by leading London literary agents with a view to representing writers.

The top 13 stories (those eligible) are submitted to the National Short Story Prize, worth £15k

Entry Fee:  £7 per story

Judging
All entries are judged anonymously.
Amateur and professional writers compete on an equal footing.

Anthology

The top 26 stories and poems will be published in the Bridport Prize 2009 anthology

The Dorset Award

An additional £100 and a perpetual trophy is awarded to the best local (Dorset, UK) winner or runner up

All 26 winners are invited to a Prizegiving Lunch at the Town Hall in Bridport, Dorset.
